Impressions:

The original PHÖNIX has always held a special place among high-end IEMs, particularly for its exceptionally delicate and emotionally expressive midrange. It was a tuning with a clear preference for vocals, especially female voices, where its refined sweetness and intimate presentation could be truly captivating. With the Final Edition, Vision Ears has taken a different approach. Rather than simply enhancing what the original already did well, PHÖNIX FE broadens its capabilities while carefully preserving the qualities that made the original so memorable.

One of the most noticeable improvements is the overall tonal balance. The low frequencies have gained additional presence and extension, creating a more substantial foundation beneath the music. Bass instruments carry greater authority, while the added low-end weight gives the presentation a more complete and grounded character. Importantly, this additional bass energy does not fundamentally change the identity of PHÖNIX. Instead, it provides a better sense of proportion between the lower frequencies and the rest of the spectrum, making the Final Edition feel more versatile across different genres.

The midrange remains the centerpiece, but its character has evolved in a particularly meaningful way. Vision Ears has long demonstrated an exceptional understanding of vocal timbre, and PHÖNIX FE continues that tradition beautifully. Vocals are delicate, finely textured, and gently sweet, with just enough coloration to make them engaging without losing their natural character. There is a certain elegance to the presentation that is difficult to capture through technical descriptions alone. Voices sound expressive and emotionally convincing, yet never excessively romanticized or artificially saturated.

Compared with the original, the Final Edition feels less specifically tailored toward female vocals. The upper-midrange emphasis is more smoothly distributed, allowing different voices and instruments to maintain a more consistent tonal character. This is especially noticeable with acoustic instruments, where the relationship between body, texture, and upper harmonics feels more naturally proportioned. Rather than drawing attention to a particular vocal register, PHÖNIX FE gives the entire midrange a greater sense of balance and completeness.

The treble also benefits from this refinement. With improved extension and a more open upper-frequency presentation, PHÖNIX FE introduces additional clarity and air without abandoning the smoothness associated with Vision Ears. Fine details emerge naturally, with enough definition to satisfy listeners accustomed to modern high-end technical performance. The transition from the upper mids into the treble feels more coherent, contributing to a sound that is revealing without becoming unnecessarily aggressive.

Spatially, PHÖNIX FE is not an IEM that attempts to create the widest possible soundstage. Its horizontal presentation is relatively moderate by today's flagship standards, but what it lacks in sheer width, it makes up for with convincing depth and a wonderful sense of presence. Instruments are positioned with clear spatial relationships, while the presentation maintains an intimate connection to the performance. This creates a particularly engaging sense of being present with the musicians, rather than simply observing a recording from a distance.

In the broader flagship market, PHÖNIX FE stands out as a remarkably well-rounded performer. Its resolution is excellent, its tonal balance feels mature, and its versatility represents a meaningful step forward from the original. That said, listeners seeking an unusually expansive horizontal soundstage or a strongly exaggerated sense of spatial scale may find other flagships more suitable.

What makes PHÖNIX FE special, however, is not any single technical achievement. It is the way Vision Ears has preserved its unmistakable midrange identity while allowing the rest of the frequency spectrum to develop more naturally around it. The original PHÖNIX was a beautiful specialist; the Final Edition feels like a more complete expression of the same philosophy.

Engineering Insight: Refining the Midrange Balance

One of the most meaningful changes in PHÖNIX FE is how its midrange presence is distributed. Rather than relying on a narrowly emphasized region to bring certain vocals forward, the Final Edition takes a smoother, more broadly balanced approach. Combined with its fuller bass foundation and renewed upper-frequency energy, this helps explain why the sound feels more complete across different instruments and vocal ranges.

The result is a presentation that maintains Vision Ears' familiar sweetness and emotional expression, but with a more natural relationship between voices, instruments, and their surrounding space. It is not simply about adding more bass or treble, but allowing the midrange to remain special without dominating the entire listening experience.
