Impressions:

PAW S3 has easily been one of our biggest surprises this year, and we can already see it becoming one of our new references for both listening and tuning.

The first thing that stands out is just how black the background is. The level of background purity feels almost out of place at this price, and it is something we do not always hear even from much more expensive players. Notes come through with excellent separation and contrast, while very small details are incredibly easy to pick out.

The second surprise is the bass. Sub-bass extension is extremely deep and controlled, with a sense of foundation that is hard to believe from something this compact.

These two qualities immediately reminded us of one of Lotoo's best players, the LPGT Ti. In some ways, the S3 feels like a portable DAC version of the LPGT Ti, especially in the way it combines an incredibly clean background with deep, authoritative bass.

What really makes the S3 special, though, is how balanced everything feels. It is neutral and highly resolving without sounding clinical or tiring. Its revealing nature makes it an excellent reference source, but there is still enough smoothness and musicality to make it something we genuinely enjoy listening to.

There is no question that PAW S3 is one of our biggest surprises of the year. For both critical listening and everyday enjoyment, it punches far above what we expected from a portable DAC.
